If you are a friend of mine, it should come as no surprise that days with sunshine, blue skies and shorelines have my heart. As we unofficially say good-bye to Summer, it’s time to make room for pumpkin spice, trees turning color, and cool nights sleeping with the windows open.
While I love a cozy sweater when the time is right, I’m not ready to pack away my summer clothes yet! With just a few simple styling tricks, I can easily take my favorite warm-weather basics and turn them into great fall fashion!
1. Add a shirt for an extra layer. Sundresses are a fun staple in the sun, but slipping a cute tee under is a great way to get more mileage out of your favorite summer go-to this fall. This works great with several of our pieces, especially paired with a cute sway dress or jumpsuit. I love the way our Hi-Lo V Neck Dress looks with a button-up blouse under.
2. Introduce dark colors: Instead of wearing your flowery summer blouse and light colored purse with a pair of white jeans, swap them out for charcoal. Add a burgundy sweater, tan leather bag, and metallic flats, and you are ready for fall.
(Yes, friends! You can totally wear white after Labor Day! My motto? ( If you like it, wear it! )
3. Throw on a jean jacket, vest or sweater over a dress or leggings and a tee? Super easy and instantly fall. Here in Virginia, where cool mornings often turn into pretty warm afternoons, layering is great for this time of year.
4. Switch out your shoes.
Honestly, as a fitness instructor, one of my favorite things about cooler weather is closed-toe shoes! Since a good pedicure doesn’t last me long, a cute pair of suede booties make me happy. In addition, don’t be afraid to wear ‘bare legs”. There’s still a little time to show off that summer tan before it turns cold. (Hang on to your tan a bit longer, by trying out my favorite sunless tanning spray, found here!)
5. Finally: Think outside the box. The great thing about style is it is unique to YOU…and that’s really the most important tip of all.
I love a maxi skirt paired with a knit sweater and leggings under. Leggings under a shorter skirt and Converse can look adorable. A sleeveless summer dress gets new life worn with a long sleeve graphic t under, tights and a pair of closed-toe clogs. Don’t make it complicated!
