If you are a friend of mine, it should come as no surprise that days with sunshine, blue skies and shorelines have my heart. As we unofficially say good-bye to Summer, it’s time to make room for pumpkin spice, trees turning color, and cool nights sleeping with the windows open.

While I love a cozy sweater when the time is right, I’m not ready to pack away my summer clothes yet! With just a few simple styling tricks, I can easily take my favorite warm-weather basics and turn them into great fall fashion!

Here are my top 5 ways to help take you from summer to fall. Even better? You probably have most of these in your closet already.

1. Add a shirt for an extra layer. Sundresses are a fun staple in the sun, but slipping a cute tee under is a great way to get more mileage out of your favorite summer go-to this Fall.  This tip works great with jumpers and jumpsuits, too. Try adding a fitted long sleeve tee instead of a cropped tank under those baggy (TikTok made you buy it) baggy jumpsuits.

2.  Introduce dark colors:  Instead of wearing your flowery summer blouse and light colored purse with a pair of white jeans, swap them out for charcoal.  Add a burgundy sweater, tan leather bag, and metallic flats, and you can easily get an extra month or two out of your favorite white denim.

(Yes, friends! You can totally wear white after Labor Day!  My motto?  ( If you like it, wear it! )

3. Throw on a jean jacket, vest or sweater over a dress or leggings and a tee. Biker shorts with an oversized sweatshirt are super trendy. Here in Virginia, where cool mornings often turn into pretty warm afternoons, layering is great for this time of year -super easy and instantly Fall.

4.  Switch out your shoes.

Honestly, one of my favorite things about cooler weather is closed-toe shoes!  Since a good pedicure doesn’t last me long, a cute pair of suede booties makes me happy.  In addition, don’t be afraid to wear ‘bare legs”. There’s still a little time to show off that summer tan before it turns cold.  (Hang on to your tan a bit longer, by trying out my favorite sunless tanning spray, found here!)

5.   Finally: Think outside the box.  The great thing about style is it is unique to YOU…and that’s really the most important tip of all. Take a look at your closet and I bet you'll find lots of items that you can get more mileage out of: a floral maxi skirt pairs well with a coordinating corduroy jacket, a graphic tee or sweatshirt over a body-con tank and paired with booties, a scarf that adds color and texture, even simply changing up your jewelry.

Taking your favorite pieces and making them work for on-trend fall fashion should be simple!
